pretty much on the ks/mo border. But any way sketchy little place. I
asked them to check our chains to see where they were at. He looks at
the chain for a moment then says, looks good! I asked if he had a
chain checker and he told me "Naa, don't need one of those!"
So, I was a bit skeptical of the place but no one else seemed to mind
it.

I'm with you, one can't judge a chain without a chain checker. At least, not until things are so ridiculously worn that your chainwheel teeth are little points. Was this place called "THE BOGUS BIKE SHOP"?
